Scott DeGroot
Bio
Scott practices exclusively in the area of Family Law, representing clients for all of their Family Law needs including property division, child support, spousal support, and parenting issues. Scott regularly appears in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court to advocate for his clients. However, Scott also understands that many family issues are best addressed outside the walls of a courtroom, and is equally prepared and equipped to negotiate a resolution. Where possible, Scott also assists his clients in avoiding the stress and costs that can be associated with a relationship breakdown by preparing marriage contracts or cohabitation agreements.
Scott graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2011, receiving both an Honours degree in Health Sciences and an Honours degree in Psychology/Life Sciences. Following his graduation, Scott spent 18 months working as a site supervisor for a mid-size commercial construction company before returning to school to obtain his Juris Doctor from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. During his time at Queen’s, Scott was a member of the Queen’s Prison Law Clinic, where he assisted inmates with disciplinary and administrative matters within Kingston’s federal institutions.
Scott’s diverse background has taught him that “cookie cutter” solutions do not work – every problem requires a unique solution, and the ability to find a meaningful solution often comes from the ability to appreciate the perspective of each party to an issue.
Scott articled at Waterous Holden Amey Hitchon LLP in 2016-2017. During this time, he gained exposure to many areas of law including Civil Litigation, Corporate Law, Wills and Estates, and Real Estate, where he developed invaluable knowledge and skills that he puts to use every day in his Family Law practice to obtain the best result for his clients. Following his call to the Bar in June 2017, Scott commenced his career as a Family Law Associate with the firm.
